It was emotional but worthwhile after home boy David Samanya, claimed the first Jinja Caddies Golf Open held at the par 72 nine hole Jinja club on Monday.
Samanya playing off handicap six was good to go on his own turf as he claimed the overall crown on day when he beat 55 caddies and artisan golfers in the first tournament organised by fellow golfer scratch player Abbey Bagalana in his home town.
The Jinja based caddy who has been playing golf since the age of 8 was on good form on the course with scores of 38 and 36 to return with two over par 74 gross.
“I am lost for words and I don’t know what too say,” an emotional Samanya said. “I have won several awards in tournaments here with my fellow caddies, but this one was a special one for me.”
Brian Omirembe, was the men’s nett winner with 64 nett while John Koto was runner-up with 65 nett. The women’s crown went to Julia Nampewo with 70 nett while Loyce Bako was runner-up with 71 nett.
The juniors category was taken by Rogers Eyoyo with 62 nett while Godfrey Nsubuga was runner-up with 64 nett. The best artisan play was Jersey Odiiri with 77 gross.
The tournament was sponsored by Footage Innovations, Gomba Fishing Industry, Jinja Club and Individual members of the club. Bagalana added that the tournament will be rotated and the trophy for the overall winner is revolving.
The tournament attracted caddies from Jinja Club, Entebbe Club, Namulonge golf club, Mehta Golf Club and Uganda Golf Club.
