Regional rugby woes have continued as the Central Rugby 7s competition was indefinitely called off on Friday night at 11pm, just hours to kick off.

The Central region has been the poster child of second tier rugby in Uganda, often pulling their own weight amidst meagre resources allocated from the Uganda Rugby Union coffers.

The cancellation of the two circuits leaves more questions than answers, as the man charged with managing the affairs of the Central region called time on his chairmanship.

Charles Senteza has been serving as the chairman of the Central Uganda Rugby Union (CURA), a position he assumed in April of 2023. His tenure has been largely successful, characterized by making the most of a shoe string budget that the regional Unions have had to work with.

Although his resignation letter doesn’t cite any specific reasons for laying down his tools, it is no secret that the pressures and frustrations of doing a thankless job in that environment of scarcity may have gotten to the man.

Whereas the Central region showed eagerness to carry on with the tournament, which was originally slated on the Uganda Rugby Union schedule to take place between June and July, the other regions had remained silent.

It is yet to be seen how the competition moves forward on this busy calendar that has the Rugby Africa Cup 2025 in July, and the National Rugby 7s competition that was meant to kick off on 31st May, likely to commence in August, the original end month.
