Ivory Coast secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Mozambique in the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) encounter at Stade de Marrakech on Wednesday.
The Elephants started the title defence with a tough win against Mozambique in an end-to-end encounter.
Ivory Coast nearly took the lead inside the first minute through Yan Diomande who nearly caught goalkeeper Ernan Siluane out of position but the attempt found the side net.
Diomande almost opened the scoring at the half-hour mark but his attempt went slightly above the frame after bouncing off the ground.
On the stroke of the first stanza, Franck Kessie’s header from point-blank range was smartly gathered by goalkeeper Siluane in emphatic fashion.
Kessie headed a cross into the path of Amad Diallo whose following effort went through the legs of goalkeeper Reinildo Mandava.
Ivory Coast’s side weren’t at their best for much of the game despite the cut-and-clear chances created in the second stanza of the duel.
Kessie came close twice to doubling Ivory Coast’s lead but his effort flew narrowly wide of the area.
Despite the strong fight from Mozambique, the Ivory Coast hung in, stretching their unbeaten run to eight matches against Mamba.
