From flirting with relegation to being within touching distance of the top of the table, things are really looking up for the Mongers.

The Entebbe-based side was dragged into the relegation battle after losing a crucial game against the Warriors, but recovered in the playoffs to condemn the Kampani Eagles to the drop from premiership rugby. In addition to losing key players like Mark William Lukwago and Robin Philip Odrua, the Mongers parted ways with veteran coach Brian Makalama ahead of the 2026 season.

In a masterstroke of genius, they brought Shakim Ssembusi from the Walukuba Barbarians, a signing that has tremendously paid off. Ssembusi has seamlessly fit into the squad, proving to be an indispensable cog in the unbeaten Mongers’ machine. He has previously played center for Walukuba and wing for the Rugby Cranes 15s, but it is at fullback where he has done the most damage for Mongers.

In the absence of Edgar Kairu and Odrua, Ssembusi has taken on the kicking mantle and has won two man-of-the-match accolades while at it. Mongers also acquired the services of an experienced scrumhalf from the Buffaloes and he has also hit the ground running. These two signings in key positions are a testament to what could be when a club recruits well.

Although the Mongers forwards pack isn’t what it used to be, it is blessed with hooker and captain, Cheche Morgan, who has led from the front so far, winning the man of the match award against Rhinos. With whispers of Muhammad Athiyo, the most decorated domestic coach in Uganda, consulting with the Entebbe side, things can only get better for the Mongers.
