Senior Category Winners:

Men: Phillip Kiplimo (35:01:34) – 12KM

Women: Juliet Chekwel (26:57:53) – 8KM

The highlight of the 2015 National Cross Country championships at the Jinja Golf Course over the weekend was the maiden victory for Prisons runner, Phillip Kiplimo over the seasoned Moses Kipsiro in the seniors (12KM) category.

Kiplimo was toe –to-toe with Kipsiro, Moses Kibet and the rest of the leading pack for long spells of the race that was run under hot conditions.

Until the last 3 KM, Kipsiro set the pace before Kiplimo took charge and it was then that the best athlete with the finishing kick would carry the day.

I prepared well for the race. The speed was too high and the ground bumpy but I persevered as it grew older

Kiplmo attested to Kawowo Sports, shortly after the early morning race.

Kiplimo crossed the tape after 35:01:34 minutes with Kipsiro coming second (35:02:59) and Moses Kibet finishing third with a timing of 35:16:81.

Juliet Chekwel won the seniors women event with a time of 26:57:53 beating Adero Nyakisi to the tape. Adero clocked 27:24:08. Third was Nancy Chebitegei (27:34:68).

It was a great race and I thank my fellow participants for the challenge

A heavily panting Chekwel told Kawowo Sports after the race that had sprinter, Halima taking part.

Joshua Cheptegai and Stellah Chesang won the junior men and women events.

Ugly Scenes:

As the Seniors’ women race was taking place, ugly scenes erupted just besides the start/finish point as Police tried to arrest a suspected murder, Sande Satya.

Athlete, Moses Kipsiro spearheaded the arrest-resistance fight of the man suspected to be his biological brother that nearly grew violent not until police fired two bullets in the air to disperse the rowdy mob.

This partly disrupted the seniors’ women race and some athletes Kawowo Sports castigated the incident- that might have led to the lowering of the race pace.

Uganda Athletics Federations official mouth piece,Namayo Mawerere regretted the incident but hailed all the athletes who turned up.

The races have been great although the fighting incidents stand to be condemned. We promise a better show in the next events

Mawerere said.

The best performers are set to represent Uganda at the World Cross Country Championships in China next month.
