The annual Girls Cricket Week will be hosted by Gulu City for the second year running, with the number growing from 16 schools to 20 schools.
The growth in the game in the regions is reflected in the increase in the number of participating schools.
The increase in the numbers has given opportunity to four debutants, St Theresa Girls SSS from Northern Region, St Cornelius SSS Kalagala from the Central Region, Bwala SSS from Masaka and Kasese SSS from the Western Region.
The tournament brings together schools from six different regions of Uganda. The qualification pathway features 45 schools, with eight-time winners Jinja SSS and four-time winners Gayaza High School all making it through their regions.
Defending Champions Olila High School will be one of the favourites but will face competition from Light SSS, who defeated them in the regional finals.
Sacred Heart from Gulu and Masaka SSS made the finals last year but fell short to the dominant schools from East, but a year is enough time to correct any past mistakes; both have never won the Schools’ Cricket Week title.
The tournament is a pathway for the next generation of Victoria Pearls players, and with the U-19 Women’s World Cup qualifiers to be held later this year, the best talent will be selected to represent Uganda in September.
