The race to grab places at the business end of the Girls’ Cricket Week was the highlight of Matchday 3. For some teams, it was a case of who would finish top of the group, and for others, it was an opportunity to find form ahead of the placement games.

In the morning, a grudge between Masaka SS and St John’s SS Mukono was the highlight, with the former holding their nerve to win by four wickets.

St John’s SS started strong in setting a total, but once the first wicket went down with 24 on the board, it went downhill from there. They ended up putting on just 57 runs inside 13 overs.

In the run chase, St John’s SS Mukono struck early, but a steady partnership in the middle laid the foundation for the win. The victory for Masaka SS ensured top spot for them in Group D, and the loss relegated StJohn’s to second place.

Defending Champions Olila High School remained unbeaten with two wins in the day. The most important being the afternoon game against the giant killers, Masindi SS.

Olila had gotten past St James in the morning without breaking much of a sweat, but they had to be on their A-game against Masindi SS. Josephine Icumar (41) and Malisa Ariokot (27) with the handy knocks that helped them post a strong total.

In the run chase, Masindi SS failed to mount a challenge, and the 23 extras gifted by Olila High School gave their final total some respect. Olila High School finished top of Group A while Masindi SS finished second, both qualifying for the Super 8.

Record winners Jinja SSS clinched top spot in Group C after flexing with second-placed Sacred Heart SS. In a rain-affected game, the record winners found a way to get past a resilient Sacred Heart, and the experience of Jinja SSS got them over the line. Sacred Heart settled for second place and also earned a place in the Super 8 with Jinja SSS.

Mt St Henry’s Mukono hold the fate of Soroti SS in Group B. A win for them against Kasese SS will see them clinch the final Super 8 place and also finish second behind the unbeaten Light SSS.

All the teams that have topped the groups are yet to drop a game. Olila High School from Group A, Light SSS from Group B, Jinja SSS from Group C and Masaka SSS in Group D.

The other schools to book their Super 8 places include Masindi SS (Group A), Sacred Heart (Group C) and St John’s SS Mukono (Group D).

The eight teams in the Super 8 will be put into two groups, with the two sides in each group qualifying for the semifinals and finals.
