16th Inter-University Games: 16th – 22nd December 2015

Barely three weeks to the start of the 2015 Inter-University games in Busoga University, the local organizing committee (LOC) has intensified preparations for a successful tournament.

Addressing the various members on the different working committees, Job Mwegombi, the Vice chairperson of the local organizing committee lauded the collective effort from all the stakeholders for the effort of working tooth and nail to see all the facilities that will be used for the games finished in a record time.

I thank all everybody whose effort can never go unrecognized for working diligently to see the games a success. We have given ourselves a set deadline of two weeks to have all the last minute finishes

Daudi Ssaana, head of technical assured great organization of all the sixteen games that will be played by the 29 Universities that have so far confirmed entry.

Key of the preparations to host the over 5000 participants and 1000 officials lies upon the provision of adequate security around playing facilities and accommodation environs.

Head of security, C/Asp. Hope Jean Kayeny called for positive working efforts from all the circles to ensure a safe environment.

We have set in place great security precautions with well trained personnel. We shall have the canine unit, walk throughs and metal scanners at all the four main gates of the university, at playing facilities and accommodation facilities

Bishop Willis will accommodate the University officials with Iganga Girls and Boys’ schools the residences for the athletes.

Teams start to arrive by 16th December 2015 before the games officially commence the following day.

Sporting disciplines at the Games:

Beach Soccer and the board game, Mweso will be played for the very first time at the games.

They join the other sporting disciplines which have been part of the menu and these are soccer, netball, volleyball, basketball, chess, darts, Karate, basketball, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Handball, Badminton, Rugby, swimming, track and field events (athletics) and woodball.

For the second time in the history since 1995, the games will be held outside the central region.

Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) hosted the second edition of the games in 1995.

Ndejje University won the last tourney which was held at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in Mukono.

Makerere remains the record holders with 11 titles under their belt. Sadly though, Makerere University will not take place in the 2015 games.

Meanwhile, Nteza Sports Center donated sports equipment worth Ugx 4M to Busoga University on Friday.

Grace Nteza, the proprietor of the sports shop used the opportunity to appreciate the university management for the spirit of promoting sports in Uganda.
