UCU Open final:

UCU Lady Canons 54-51 KCCA Leopards

Last year, UCU Lady Canons failed to make the finals of the Uganda Christian University invitational tournament and had to settle for third place.

There wasn’t going to be a repeat of that this time round and the university side defeated KCCA Leopards 54-51 to lift the trophy at the university main campus on Sunday.

Led by team captain and eventual MVP Vilma Achieng, the Lady Canons came from behind to defeat a new-look KCCA side.

Achieng, who was rested on day one of the event, came into the team with massive contribution both in the semis and the finals.

KCCA, who had defeated Javon Ladies in the semis, didn’t go down without a fight.

Former Lady Canon Maureen Amoding scored a foul 3-pointer and converted on the line to cut UCU’s lead to 1 point (52-51) with less than 10 seconds on the clock.

Amoding then misplaced her pass intended for Cynthia Irankunda before Achieng scored on the buzzer off a Zainah Lokwameri long pass to seal victory.

JKL finished third with victory over Javon Ladies in the third place classification game.

Achieng was voted as the MVP of the tournament while Irankunda took the top scorer’s accolade.
