Uganda Cranes new captain Dennis Onyango kick started his new role in style when he guided the team to a 1-0 victory away to Cape Verde in a Group L encounter of the AFCON 2019 qualifiers.
Onyango, taking over the mantle from the retired Geofrey Massa led by example throughout the match.
Besides commanding the crucial leadership from the back, Onyango rose to the occasion, not once or twice but throughout the match to thwart the opposition attacks by Garry Rodrigues, Ponck, Ze Luis, Julio Tavares and second half substitute, Heldon.
Upon return to the country with the rest of the players, Onyango spoke highly of the players during a special press conference organized by FUFA at the Entebbe International Airport.
“We had gallant soldiers on the field of play. Everyone was dedicated and had the passion. There was belief and courage even from the young players,” Onyango stated during the press conference.
Second half substitute Geoffrey Sserunkuma scored the lone strike on the day in the 83rd minute. The KCCA striker netted moments after replacing Emmanuel Okwi in the 78th minute.
Uganda Cranes lead Group L with 3 points. Tanzania and Lesotho have one point apiece with Cape Verde having zero.
