As predicted, the name Patrick Kawuma triumphed at the Super Eight Rapid Chess Challenge.
Kawuma, a late addition to the challenge due to Rajab Kamoga’s pulling out almost went unscratched at the one day event that was hosted at the Comrades Arena in Wandegeya on Saturday.
The FM was matchless at the event that was curtain raising the Ultimate Death Challenge, pasting all his opponents, and only suffering a hitch in the fifth round when he lost to fellow FM Haruna Nsubuga.
The rapid mini tourney saw Kawuma march to victory with 9 points collected from 10 points. He was distantly followed by Nsubuga who had a disappointing and shifting start. The rated 2229 lost thrice and won just a couple of games in the first five rounds.
He, however, staged an excellent show in the last five rounds, winning all to end the event second with seven points.
Simon Gonza came third with 4.5 points. After an inferior start, Gonza managed to beat Paul Kafuko in the final round to finish in the rewarding position. The rated 2122 went into the last round needing to beat his opponent who he lost to in the fifth round to finish third and he did just that.
On fourth position was Kafuko who surprised a few souls on Saturday. Aside from Kawuma and Nsubuga, the rest of the players tasted Kafuko’s wrath. He collected 4 points.
Emmanuel Mukose came third with 3 points and the bottom place went to Thomas Katairo whose poor display was a surprise to many given his recent form. Katairo managed just 2.5 points.
The event was to be contested for by eight players, but Joshua Katumba and Edgar Ntende pulled out at the last minute.
