Council of East and Central Africa (CECAFA) representatives Sudan made a great stride at the on-going CHAN tournament in Morocco.

Sudan defeated the tournament favourites Zambia 1-0 on Saturday in Marrakech to reach the semi final stage.

Maaz Teed Saifeldin Bakhit beat goalkeeper Toaster Nsabata for the day’s only goal after 32 minutes.

Christened the Desert Hawks, Sudan becomes the first CECAFA member country to reach thus far in this tournament that is exclusively played by locally based players in the respective African leagues.

Earlier in the game, Sudanese goalie Akram El Hadi was called upon to tame a goal bound effort from Kondwani Mtonga’s header  after an inviting corner by Adrian Chama.

Sudan will face either Nigeria or Angola (the two sides square off on Sunday).

Morocco is the other country to have reached the semi finals after overcoming Namibia 2-0 in Casablanca on Saturday. Tournament leading top scorer Ayoub El Kaabi and Saidi Salaheddine were on target for Morocco.
