James Kariuki crosses the line

Kenyan elite athletes swept the ninth MTN Kampala marathon this morning at Kololo airstrip as 20,000 runners took part in the biggest social event on the Ugandan calendar. Kenya’s James Kariuki Mbugua won the 42 kilometer race in a time of 2.16.46 and the 16 million his compatriot James Yatich and Ernest Kipruto completed a Kenyan hattrick with times of 2.18.48 and 2.19.08 to win 8 and 4 million respectively.

Rwanda’s Jean Mvuyekure was third in a time of 2.19.18 and scooping 3 million shillings while Moses Cherop of Uganda was fourth in a time of 2.21.42 and winning 2 million.

The women’s marathon was won by Uganda’s Jane Suuto in a time of 2.47.44 and taking home 16 million Ethiopia’s Dinknesh Tefera and Rose Kiboino from Kenya where second and third with times of 2.48.13 and 2.48.22 they also walked off with 8 million and 4 million respectively while Lucy Karimi and Jane Nyambura from Kenya finished fourth and fifth with times of 2.50.36 and 2.15.14 respectively as they got 3 and 2 million each.

Funds raised in this year’s marathon will go to the district of Amuria to enable them get safe water and good sanitation.
