Uganda drops as AFCON 2012 has effect on FIFA rankings

The recently concluded 28th edition of the African Nations Cup has significantly had a say in the latest FIFA rankings. African sides which featured and beared fruit in the three week tournament in West Africa had better positioning while those who did not qualify dropped.

Co hosts Gabon moved up 46 places and now lie 44 slots away from summit leaders, Spain. Christopher Katongo and Kalushya Bwaliya’s Zambia, the winners moved up 28 places to 43rd position in the world.

The Chipolopolo are now 4th in Africa. AFCON runners up, IvoryCoast remained top side in Africa despite losing to Zambia in the final. Ghana and Algeria also lie between Sunday’s AFCON finalists.

Record CECAFA champions, Uganda dropped five slots and are currently 87th in the world. Uganda is 20th in the Africa still better ranked than Togo and Equatorial Guinea, who made significant progress and gigantic steps forward.

East African Neighbours Kenya dropped two places to position 123 while Tanzania also dropped two places to 139. Rwanda meanwhile moved up to places to 108 in the world
