ELGON CUP RESULTS
Kenya 12-0 Uganda
(Uganda win 19-17 on aggregate)
W. Kenya 15-3 Uganda
(Kenya win 21-18 aggregate)
Although they lost 12-0 at Rugby Football Union of East Africa (RUFEA) grounds, Rugby Cranes avoided a marginal loss and ensured they got the two legged Elgon Cup victory, after six years without making a statement.
The 19-5 win in Kyadondo last Saturday was well shielded putting today’s visitors to 19-17 on aggregate, hence edging a dominant Kenyan side. Just like Anthony Kinene who had failed to score two penalties in 18 minutes, Eden Agero could not put Kenya ahead from a penalty and both sides were scoreless by halftime.
Tries from eighth man Lawrence Buyachi and wing Tony Onyango, had put a charged Kenya in the lead eight minutes into the second decisive half. Agero converted only the first. There was panic, adrenaline surged among Ugandan fans back home and Kinene missed another crucial penalty as the clouds ordered a weather change.
Like from the start, Ugandan backs held their nerves and with good kicking from the danger zone, minutes flew away from the hosts’ hands. In the end, Uganda had survived the 13 point loss hence winning the 2012 Elgon Cup though the Nairobi tour jinx remains a hard one for us.
