Wanderers humble brave Charity

National Women’s Cricket League Results

Wanderers 87/10 Charity 84/10

After a war of words via social network, Facebook prior to the tie, it was referred to as the ‘Battle of Champions’ by women’s cricket die-hards. And indeed the tag name was depicted as it turned out to be a fascinating game. Wanderers beat Charity by four runs to hand the latter their first league loss yesterday in the National Women’s League duel at Lugogo.

With help from Kenyan, Sarah Bhakhita’s 10 off 14, Mary Nanderega’s 12 off 21 and Naomi Kayondo’s 22 off 41, Wanderers were all out for 87 in 28.5 overs. But Charity who looked bold would have had a better a chance for victory if hard-hitter Barbrah Mukankusi (21/32) had not suffered a quick run-out by Wanderers’ Carol Namugenyi at 15.2.

Just at the critical moment when Charity needed a big heart at the cris for 20 runs to bury the game, Ritah Nyangendo was caught by Namugenyi at 24.5. The last pair in Lydia Amoit and Daphine Mukasa couldnot hold back the pressure as it only collapsed at 27.4 after Naomi Kayondo had bowled out the former. “I am glad to have played a big role on my side’s win” commented Kayondo moments after the triumph.

But Charity coach, Jonathan Sebanja ponders his side would have chased the 80-odd mark. “We would have won the game but it was a poor finish. The last three of our batting order let my team down” said Sebanja. Wanderers mantain a 100% record in the league.
