Middle distance runner Janet Achola has been recognized by the Uganda Sports Press Association as the sports personality for the month for May. Achola collected 705 points on her way to beating Rober Ssentogo and Marvin Odongo who managed 660 and 605 respectively.

Achola finished third in the in the 1500m at the 30th Fanny Blankers-Koen. Hengelo, Netherland. A performance that saw her qualify for the Olympics in the process, but also reclaimed the national record after a time of 4:05.52. The past record was held by Annent Nekesa (4:09.17) she had set in 2010.

Achola is among the only three Ugandan female athletes that have qualified for the 2012 London Olympics. She beat footballer Robert Ssentogo who helped URA win the Bell Uganda Cup with his thunderous free kick against Bunamwaya in Pece Stadium Gulu District. It turned out to be the match winner and guaranteed him of the top scorer’s golden boot, he is also the leading the scorer in the league with 15 goals.

Youngster Marvin Odongo who scored four tries in the Bamburi Rugby Super series to help Rwenzori reach the final for the first finished third with 605 points. Rally driver Duncan Mubiru and Adolf Muhumza were recognized for winning the Uganda Motor Club (UMC) Rally in Masaka and the two-day Eskom Golf Open at par 72 at Jinja golf course respectively. Achola will be presented with her award from the sponsor Nile Special at a dinner someday next week.
