NATIONAL WOMEN’S CRICKET LEAGUE FINAL RESULT
Wanderers 77/10 Charity 78/2
Despite being underdogs, Charity Trust Fund Cricket Club defied odds to defeat favourites Wanderers by eight wickets, to clinch this year’s National Women’s Cricket League at Lugogo oval yesterday.
The star studded Wanderers’ side , who looked rusty on the day, were all out for 77 runs in 30.4 overs after Charity spinner Ritah Nyangyendo had exhibited stellar form as she poised bowling figures of 6/16 and a maiden. Only Kenyan Margaret Banja (24 off 58 balls) and captain Mary Nanderenga (10 off 39) reached double figures.
In the second innings, Charity’s work was made light after opening pair Barbrah Mukankusi and Ann Kisakye reached 20 after the first 12 balls. That means they were a half century away from victory with 48 overs to spare.
Mukankusi collapsed in the subsequent over but it did not deter Kisakye to perform. She managed an unbeaten 26 runs and skipper Flavia Laker added another 15 off 25 to reach 78, a feat that landed the side their second successive title. Banja and country mate Sarah Bhakita picked a wicket a piece.
Laker who finished the season with 13 wickets in 41.4 overs and her team’s coach Jonathan Ssebanja was delighted on his side’s splendid finish.
This was Charity’s second successive trophy, making them the record winners on two times after only three editions.
