Uganda 4-0 Congo Brazzaville. (Uganda advances 5-3 on aggregate). Uganda Cranes has advanced to the next round of the 2013 AFCON qualifiers after thumping visiting Congo Brazzaville 4-0 in a game played this afternoon at Mandela stadium, Namboole. The Cranes dominated proceedings from start to finish and went ahead in the 33rd minute after skipper Andy Mwesigwa headed home after Mike Sserumaga’s corner met Emma Okwi whose headed pass met Mwesigwa
who made no mistake but put the ball into the net. The first half ended 1-0 in Uganda’s favour but after recess, Bobby Williamson’s ran riot hitting the back of the net three times. Two minutes after restart.
left full back Godfrey Walusimbi converted from the spot after Brian Umony was fouled in the forbidden area by Congo defender Francis Nganga. This was Walusmbi’s second goal in seven days after the Bunamwaya SC defender also scored against Senegal last weekend.
This seems to awaken the visitors who started to play a counter attacking game and Uganda was lucky to survive a penalty on the hour mark after Moroccan referee waved play on when Henry Kalungi seemed to have brought danger man Chris Malonga in the forbidden area.
Three minutes later, Cyprus based striker Geoffrey Massa who had a brilliant day at office extended the hosts lead with a thunder bolt shot that tore the net for Uganda’s third after a well laid ball by winger Moses Oloya. There were protests from the Congo Brazzaville team but after noticing the hole in the net, they calmed down and resumed play.
At this moment, everything Bobby’s charges were doing done seemed perfect. The scot threw on Patrick Ochan for the tired Mike Sseumaga to keep things calm in the midfield and the tactic worked as the Cranes were now dominating possession with visitors chasing shadows.
With four minutes left on the clock, Emma Okwi put the icing on the cake with a sole goal after rounding off the entire Congo Brazzaville rear guard. This put the game behind Jean-Guy Walleme’s charges reach.
The Cranes should have added other goals but Okwi and Oloya wasted opportunities at the death.
The win ensures Uganda advances to the next stage with a 5-3 aggregate and will have to tussle it out against an opponent that took part in the 2012 AFCON on a home and away basis.
Uganda line up: Denis Onyango, Simon Masaba, Godfrey Walusimbi, Henry Kalungi, Andrew Mwesigwa, Hassan Wasswa, Moses Oloya, Mike Sserumga (Patrick Ochan), Emma Okwi, Brian Umony and Geoffrey Massa (Musa Mudde).
