Afcon 2013

CAR 1-1 Egypt (4-3 aggregate). Record African champions Egypt will not be part of the 2013 Afcon in South Africa after failing to make it to the final round of the qualifiers.

The Pharoahs could only manage a 1-1 draw with hosts Central African Rebublic in Bangui in a game they badly wanted to win by two un replied goals after a shock 3-2 loss in Alexandria in the first leg.

Fox Kethevoama gave

the hosts a 23rd minute lead before Emed Moteab equalised for Bob Bradley’s side with 13 minutes to play but couldn’t find a break through to over come the home side.

Little known CAR now becomes the last nation to join the final round draw that pits the top 15 ranked teams as per the last three Afcon editions (2008, 2010 & 2012) against the bottom 15 in the round.

Egypt’s elimination now implies North African giants Morocco joins the 15 seeded nations ahead of the 5th July draw in Johanesburg.

Egypt will now for the first time miss the tournament for the second consecutive edition after missing last year’s edition in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. The pharoahs have won the championship a record seven times.
