
The manner in which Uganda Cranes dismissed Congo Brazzaville in the 2013 Afcon qualifiers was too convincing for even the Uganda Sports Press Association (Uspa)
The sports scribes yesterday convened and voted Cranes as the sportsmen for the month of June.
The national soccer side collected 545 points,
outshining Lawn Tennis sensation David Oringa who managed 475. Oringa won the Uganda Open after he beat Rwandan Matheius Uwizeyimana 7-5, 6-4 in the finals.
Bobby Williamson’s men knocked out Congo Brazzaville with a resounding 4-0 at Namboole after going 3-1 in the first leg in Brazzaville. “On the basis of that emphatic performance against Congo Brazzaville, Uganda had to overturn a 3-1 and the team did it in tentative style,” Uspa president Mark Namanya told the media.
Cranes had earlier pulled off two draws against Angola and Senegal in Luanda and Kampala respectively to keep Uganda’s hopes of ever featuring at the 2014 World Cup alive. The next Fifa rankings are released tomorrow and the Cranes are expected to move big stride from their current position of 93rd.
Express finished third after winning the Bell Uganda Super league after 16 years. Nemo Stars Volleyball Club and 300om steeplechase runner Benjamin Kipligat were also acknowledged foe excelling last month.
