Uganda on course as CGM assembly draws closer

After hosting a successful Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (Chogm) in 2007, three years later Uganda won the bid to host another international event  but from the sports sector. The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) will take place at Munyonyo Commonwealth Resort Beach from September 24-28.

Over 100 delegates from 72 countries that make the Commonwealth family are expected to converge in Kampala as part of their preparations for the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Local organizing committee chairman Ambrose Tashobya believes Uganda is on schedule to pull off a successful event.

“We don’t have much work on our hands as the CGF secretariat is doing most of the work, so there is no need to panic, we are on schedule,” Tashobya said.

“Our duty is to make sure delegates are carted for while in the country and so far all our plans are falling in place,” he added. Tashobya on the other hand believes that a chance has unfolded for Uganda to market its self to the outside world through sports.

“It’s an opportunity to sell our selves to millions of sports lovers out there as a sporting country,” he said. For the time Uganda has been working with the CGF ahead of the assembly, Tashobya has seen the willingness from the secretariat to help and develop sports in this country. “We are also looking at the CGF secretariat see if can get some assistance for Uganda athletes ahead of the 2014 Games in Glasgow,” Tashobya said.
