The Uganda Rugby Union has sealed a deal with Eco Bank, to sponsor this year’s National Rugby sevens that kicks off this weekend. Eco bank has injected in cash to a tune of 20 million shillings, to be used in organizing the tournament and as prize money. The 22nd edition of the National Rugby Sevens Circuit will take its first stage the home of Mongers in Entebbe.
Eco bank is not new to sports sponsorship, being remembered for sponsoring the Uganda Super league two seasons ago. Mr. Solomon Tettey, Ecobank’s Executive Direct, also affirmed that the bank will ensure their association with Rugby for seasons.
In fact the two parties have signed a perennating deal that will see sponsorship come in effect the following years. “Rugby is a major and a well known growing sport in Uganda, and we want to ensure we get associated with the sport for as long as possible.” stated the CEO of Eco bank Mr. Solomon Tettey.
The Uganda National Sevens Circuit is a key part of the Uganda Rugby Union calendar and is used as a platform for the upcoming national team players to be groomed and selected to play in the International Rugby Board and Confederation of African Rugby competitions including the Lusaka Castle Sevens.
The Circuit will have the first stage at Entebbe on Saturday August 18, 2012, with the second stage being at Makerere Rugby grounds a week later and Legions Rugby grounds, before the final at Kyadondo, on September 8, 2012.
At least 16 teams have confirmed participation teams, among which include Heathens, Kobs, pirates, Rhinos, Buffaloes , Entebbe mongers, Rams , Boks, Kyadondo, Lira bulls, Mongers2, stallions, Engsol Tigers, summerkamp, Bootkamp, Impis.
The winning team in the tournament will receive a cash prize of 2 million shillings and a trophy , the first runner will take 1 millionand the 2nd runner up 500,000/=. Meanwhile the overal Most Valuable Player(MVP) will bag home 500,000/= with the circuit’s MVP circuit will receive 200,000/=.
