The road to next year’s women’s 7s rugby world cup will not be an easy one for Uganda’s side, the Lady Cranes.
They will play against Senegal, Zimbabwe and Cameroon in pool D of the qualifiers due September 29-30 in Morocco, a group that is expected to sparkle rivalry.
“None of those teams will be a walkover,” Helen Buteme, a senior player told Kawowo Sports. “I think Morocco and
Cameroon are the weakest teams there although the former will be buoyed by home support while our strongest challengers will most likely be Tunisia, Senegal and Kenya,” Buteme added.
The Charlotte Mudoola-led side will need to win five games consecutively if they are to be sure of a place at the finals next year in Moscow, Russia. The side, who settled for third at the Reunion 7s tournament Stade de route in Saint-Denis early last month, will play Cameroon first on the first day of action.
If local body Uganda Women’s Rugby Union can find the required Shs40m for tournament preparations (air tickets, playing kit, medical kit and facilitation) in time, then the side can hope for a return to the global scene.
