University league game:
KIU Vs MUK 0-1
Makerere University earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over KIU in the University league match played at St. Joseph’s Nsambya grounds on Thursday evening thanks to a solitary strike by Daniel Kasoma in the 4th minute.
KIU went in to this game as underdogs and were regarded as sheep going into the slaughterhouse. As
Muk is known for having talent and a proud university no one would have blamed the masses thinking the Wandegeya lads would hold the upper hand, it was not the other way round.
Playing away, MUK were in a mean mood as they exerted pressure but they seemed to run out of ideas on entering their opponent’s goal area. And their supporters and technical staff must have been devastated when they failed to convert what they created.
Kasoma, who was a constant thorn to the host’s defence, could have doubled the lead in the 30th minute but his goal bound attempt was blocked by the KIU goal keeper much to the disappointment of coach Fred Ndawula
Mean while Isimail Kagingo who was the lead striker offered moments of hope for KIU but they were few and far between as the illustrious team mates failed to exert any influence over affairs and him, him self Kagingo missed a couple of opportunities which would earn them a point. But the main problem on the evening was how to get past Masiko and company in the Muk’s defence.
Muk had Daniel Kasoma and Muhammad Baziira up front and the two found the going tough as their supply was quickly dealt with by Isaac Baite and Bashiir Babu in midfield where Kennedy Rwehumera and Simon Bulezi operated. “It was a good opening game, they were very confident in their possession, but all the good teams are like that.
“The game was not all that easy but we did our needful by getting the vital points away, it’s a bonus for us” said MUK coach Fred Ndawula. KIU assistant captain Bashiir Babu rued his team’s bad luck but praised the character shown by his side at home.
“We are sad about the defeat. When you look at the result, it is not positive but it made us happy to see the ‘KIU spirit’ on the pitch,” he said. “Not only could we have endured a bigger defeat, but we could have scored the equaliser and gone even further”.
