
Uganda’s Special Olympics swimming team returned recently from a international swimming event in San Juan,Puerto Rico with four medals as the country’s medal winning streak continued in the year.
The team of four athletes and a coach returned with two gold,one silver and one bronze out of the 29 countries that participated in this event from September 10-16.
Larry Craig Feni from Naguru Hill Preparatory won a gold meda; in the 50 metres free style while Abdullah Wambi, 30, from Kampala sub program won the other gold in 25 metres breast stroke as well as a silver in the 50 metres free style.
Twenty year old Aaron Bukki won a bronze in the 50 metres free style, while Fourteen year old Kevin Lubega was disqualified because he beat his own time in the preliminaries.
“The athletes participated to the best of their ability in all the events,” Samuel Kiggundu said. “We would like to see more support and recognition for the athletes.”
Twenty nine countries participated in the event, including: Uganda,Kenya,South Africa,Egypt,Great Britain,Italy,Canada,Bolivia,Honduras,Dominican Republic,Lebanon,Chile,Panama,Venezuela,Czech Republic,Brazil,Mexico,Colombia,Peru,Russia,China,Costa Rica,Puerto Rico,Islas,Cayman Islands,Bonaire,El Salvador,Uruguay and Bharat.
