Two time defending champion Michael Kawooya will have to overcome a strong draw of players including his fearest rivals as he seeks to retain his title at the Castle Lite Uganda Squash Open that gets underway at Kampala club from November 5-10.
Standing in Kawooya’s way will be his friend and close rival Ian Kajubu, who has beaten twice in the past editions of this prestigious Uganda Squash Rackets Association organised tournament. Others that are also expected to give him a run for his money include Brian Okumu, Paul Kadoma,veteran Lawrence Matovu.
“I am looking forward to the tournament and have my eyes all focused to retain my crown,but I know it won’t be a walk in the park for me this time around,” Kawooya stressed at the launch of the tournament today at venue of the event. “I have played with my opponents for a long time and I know they would like to break the form book this year.”
Kajubu last year’s losing finalist is optimistic going into this year’s event. “I am fitter and playing better going into the Open.Everyone is saying this must be my year and I hope to deliver.”
Nile Breweries under their popular brand Castle Lite have sunk 16 million into the event that is expected to attracted 80 players with the tournament will be divided into three categories that is the main draw that will have the elite players that is men and women while the next category will be 35-39 and 50 plus men’s. Edith Wamalwa is the ladies defending champion.
The winner will walk away with a cash prize and trophy.
