Replicating their form at last year’s Pepsi ICC Africa Women’s T20 and most recently the U-19 girls’ perfomance will be an audacious task for Uganda’s senior women’s team at this year’s ICC Africa Women’s T20 World Cup qualifiers.
But coach Henry Okecho will fancy his charges when seek their first global slot alongside five other sides including South Africa, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Kenya and hosts Tanzania.
On Wednesday evening, the team was together for an evening for not more than four hours and Okecho believes it could be a decisive in their path to their maiden world cup.
“It is important as it builds team spirit among the players,” he said. “Players need to enjoy each other’s company which is key for any tournament,” And after over two months of training and preparation, they will open up against hosts Tanzania on Sunday afternoon at the Annadil Burhani grounds.
The top two sides will make it to fourth edition of the global tourney due 2014 in Bangladesh. For us to emerge victorious, they need to play as a unit,” Okecho said. It is not about talent but about team work.” he added.
The pair of Gertrude Candiru and Mary Nalule received call ups to the final 14-player team in reward for their spectacular performances at just concluded Africa U-19 girls’ T20’s early this week.
Nalule picked figures of two wickets and scored 24 runs while Candiru scored 32 runs to spur the hosts to the summit. Uganda will play Kenya on Monday morning at the USDM ground before meeting South Africa later in the day. The teams leaves for Tanzania tomorrow.
