Sadolin Mongers 07-09 G4S Pirates

MTN Heathens 70-00 Summerkamp

Dmark Kobs 49-10 Xfm Impis

Toyota Buffaloes  40 – 12 Rhinos

Anthony  Kinene scored a set of three penalties including a late dramatic one to inspire G4S Pirates  to a surprise away victory over a determined Entebbe Monger’s side on the opening weekend of the Nile Special Rugby league in Entebbe.

The visitors dictated play with their swift pacy movements and excellent ball handling and caused havoc at Monger’s back-line as early as the second minute of the game played  before a capacity crowd. Brian Makalama’s boys, who were  welcoming back their inspirational player, Moses Soita after a year long injury break, scored two quick penalties through Anthony Kinene to take a 6 point lead till  the dying moments of the game.

With a minute to go, the home side, Mongers  were in the lead 7-6 after 2012 Rugby Union Most Valuable Player, Andrew Olwenyi had  scored  the game’s only try that was successfully converted by Benjamin Kinobe. The try came moments after Ronald  Adigas had  stepped foot on the turf as he was on the sidelines for the most of the evening assuming coaching responsibilities. Finally, the lethal boot of Anthony Kinene created the difference on the day, after Pirates were awarded a penalty 20 yards off the goal posts that most Monger’s players bitterly protested.

Monger’s last season’s highest point scorer (68), Adrain Wasswa  had a horrid evening at office as he failed to convert all the kicks that the team won.

”We believed we can do it till the last seconds of the game, am happy we have won the league opener. We need to improve on the backline because our forwards are doing well”, said Pirates’s Skipper , Davis Kiwalabye.

Mongers’ standing captain of the day, Robbins Nyombi, who was playing his last first and last  game of the season, before returning to Germany for his studies, blamed the day’s referees  for favouring the visitors. “I have hatred for the referee (Richard Akena), he cost us the game today”, fumed the Jacobs University, Bremen Engineering student.

Just a day before, defending champions, MTN Heathens had humiliated recently promoted Summerkamp in a  70-nil drubbing at Kyadondo Rugby grounds. Dmark Kobs walloped XFM Impis 49 -10 while Toyota  Buffaloes beat Rhinos 40 to 12 in the other fixtures.
