World over, prominent sports personalities have taken to the social micro-blogging website to stay in touch with fans. Twitter has turned out to be a great tool for the stars to reach out to their fans with news and opinions. It has also landed a few into trouble with authorities because of what they tweet sometimes. In Uganda, the use of twitter is growing and Ugandan athletes are embracing the platform. Kawowo Sports’ Darren Allan Kyeyune takes a look at some of the prominent ones. The list is in no particular order and we could have missed a few.
Edwin Ekiring (@ekiring)
He is a Netherlands-based badminton player. He is the first ranked African in the men’s singles by the World Badminton Federation. Ekiring was the first to reperesent Uganda at a badminton tournament at the Olympics.
Arthur Kyobe (@arthurkyobe1)
Kyobe is one of the lead batsmen on the current senior men’s national side. He has had semi-professional stints in South Africa and Oman, adding experience. He was part of the team that won the ICC Africa Division One T20 tourney in July 2011 at Lugogo.
Dennis Musali (@deniszenk)
He is not only an administrator with the Uganda Cricket Association but also a cricketer with Wanderers Cricket Club.
Savio Nsereko (@savio_nsereko)
Savio is a Ugandan-born German footballer who currently plays for Viktoria Köln.
Jamila Lunkuse (@jamilaswim)
She was the youngest on the team that represented Uganda at the 2012 London Olympics. Lunkuse, a student at Plymouth College in England, is a swimmer.
Vincent Kayizzi (@vkayizzi)
During the mid of the first decade of the 21st century, Kayizzi was an impressive player on the Cranes’ team. He often competed with Dan Wagaluka on the starting role on both wings.
Martin Kayongo Mutumba (@martinmutumba)
Martin Kayongo-Mutumba is an Ugandan international footballer. A winger, he is currently playing for AIK in Sweden.
Jordan Obita (@jordanobita)
He holds roots in Uganda. Obiita plays for Reading Fc and he is part of England U19 team.
Sharif Bogere (@sharifbogere)
Sharif Bogere is an undefeated boxer in the Lightweight division. He’s currently signed with Oscar De La Hoya’s company Golden Boy Promotions.
David Oringa (@oringad)
Oringa broke in 2012 after he surprised many to win the Uganda Open after eliminating Rwandese, Burundians and few countrymen. That year, he was crowned best tennis player by sports journalists’ body Uspa.
Duncan Mugabe (@mugabeduncan)
Duncan was a household in Ugandan tennis in the early 2000’s. He won bronze at the All Africa Games in Maputo in 2011.
Henry Kalungi (@HenryKalungi)
Kalungi is a defender with Richmond Kickers in New York and also a pillar in the Cranes’ defence.
Charles Ssekyaaya (@SsekyaayaCharle)
Based in Colorado, Ssekyaaya is a weightlifter. He represented Uganda at the London Olympics in the 62kg category.
Joseph Aredo (@JAredo15)
Aredo is a rugby player with Kobs. He scored a decisive penalty against Heathens that handed his team the 2012 Uganda Cup trophy at Kyadondo.
Carol Namugenyi (@carolmuhu)
Namugenyi is a national team cricket player. She used to play for Wanderers’ cricket team before the end of the 2012 season.
Marvin Odong (@skinnyblaqk)
Marvin Odong plays for Pirates RFC. He was part of Rwenzori Warriors that reached the final of the 2012 Bamburi Rugby Super Series.
Charlotte Mudoola (@Charxpose)
From a sporting family, Mudoola is part of the female rugby national team.
Maliik Kaliisa (@malikthehitman)
Kaliisa is a kick boxer. He has been overshadowed by Titus Tugume, Ronald Mugula and motor-mouthed Moses Golola.
Timothy Mudoola (@DonTimteo)
Mudoola has been a player and coach of Kobs’ rugby team. He was part of the Rugby Cranes’ team that beat Madagascar in Antannanarivo to win the 2007 CAR Cup.
Emmanuel Okwi (@okwi25)
Okwi is a striker with the national senior football team. He plays for Etoile du Sahel in Tunisia. Prior to the move to North Africa, he was one of the top strikers at Simba in Tanzania.
Naomi Kayondo (@Yondos)
Kayondo is the national women’s cricket team skipper. Her first tournament at the helm did not go well. Uganda lost three and won two at the 2013 ICC Africa Regional T20 World Cup Qualifiers in Dar es Salaam.

Kamanyire is a rugby player with Pirates RFC.
Davis Turinawe (@Onedayer)
He once captained the men’s national cricket team. Now a player with Tornado Cricket Club and also men’s U-19 head coach.
Joseph Kibirango (@jkibzo)
Kibirango is a rugby player currently playing with Toyota Buffaloes.
