MTN Uganda has this morning handed 307.6 million shillings to Uganda Red Cross at Serena Hotel to assist the people who where displaced by landslides in Bududa district, the proceeds where raised after the ninth edition of last year’s MTN Kampala Marathon.

“MTN Uganda and our partners are committed to enchancing development in the communities in which we do business, not just by providing universal access to communication, but also through contributing to providing basic and essential neccessities such as clean and safe water,” Mazen Mroue, CEO MTN Uganda said at the hand over ceremony.

The theme for last year’s marathon was ; Run with your Heart and the proceeds were earmarked for providing clean and safe water for the people of Bududa district who were displaced by landslides that claimed several lives. The displaced people were relocated by government to Kiryandongo in 2011.

“We are going to construct ten boreholes in Kiryandongo and these will cover 10 villages that is for the relocated people from the affected district of Bududa,” Michael Nataka, the secretary general of the Uganda Red Cross Society said. “The government is still trying to build satelite districts in Bududa and hopefully we shall finish the construction of the boreholes and water sanitation in three months.”

The landslide events caused significant damage to farmland, crops, and livestock, claimed over 400 human lives and displaced an estimated 5,000 people.
