Kenya 112-8 Uganda 142-6

Tanzania 137-10 Botswana 133-7

Team Tanzania put up spirited efforts to defeat Botswana by four runs in the opening fixture of the Pepsi ICC Africa Division One T20 World Cup Qualifiers at Lugogo oval on Saturday morning.

Botswana had it in their hands but failed to reach the pinnacle after poor decisions by batsmen at the fulcrum cost them way close to end.

“We should have won but lost the mantle towards the end,” Botswana skipper Karabo Modise said.

He lost the toss and Tanzania were all out for 137 runs in 19.3 overs.

Opening batsman Rehemtullah Ali notched 18 off 21 before mid-order batsmen Benson Mwita (37 off 27) and Issa Kisasi (37 off 31) added 30-odd scores.

Perhaps Botswana fielding would have done better and finished the mission under 15 overs.

But their innings were tense and entertaining as the second innings for Botswana came to an end.

Botswana opening pair of Faisal Rasheed and Sequeira Denzil was broken after 1.5 overs when the latter was bowled after scoring only four off six balls.

Modise got and partenered again with Rasheed and they reached 101 runs after 13.3  overs. It was broken after Rasheed (45 off 43) was bowled out.

Tanzania’s Riziki Kiseto caught Modise (59 off 49) moments as wickets fell. He picked 3/19 as Botswana lost five wickets in a space of 3.5 overs.

Botswana, at 129-7 required only eight runs to win from the last six deliveries but they only managed giving Tanzania the edge.

“This is a good win,” Tanzania captain Hamis Abdallah told Kawowo Sports.

In the other game, Uganda defeated rivals Kenya by 30 runs at the University Oval in Kyambogo with Arthur Kyobe 57 runs in the process.
