Titus “Hard Rock” Tugume gave his home town residents in Mbarara and the entire Ugandan community an early Easter present as he easily out powered Hungary’s Szabo Sandor in a Super Middle Weight Tune up fight held at Agip Motel in Mbarara on Good Friday.
Tugume won by a unanimous point decision after all the three judges, ruled in favour of the UPDF Soldier with 10-9, 10-10, 10-9,10-8 and 10-9 after the five round full contact fight handled by Uganda’s Celebrated Referee, Wandera Charles and supervised by Uganda Kick boxing President, Hassan Ssekirime.

He immediately launched a verbal attack on Golola, whom he is expected to battle later this year. “Am very happy for this victory, it gives me the courage to fight Moses Golola in June. I thank my coach and Professor Kateregga. I dedicate this victory to my mother and the fans”, Said the 2nd year Kampala University student of Public Administration as the crowd chanted aloud his name.

The partisan lively crowd that turned up at Agip Motel cheered every kick and jab that the lanky dark skinned Ugandan threw at the Hungarian, who looked more conversant with boxing than kicking. By the third round, Szabo had already kissed the canvas twice – thanks to Tugume’s left handed swinging kick.

“I read the white man, he wanted to knock me out with his jabs but for me I guarded and I kept him off at a distance with front kicks”, Tugume, who now boasts of 4 straight professional fight victories said of his winning strategy against the Hungarian based Szabo.

Tugume’s coach, Meddie Mayambala praised his fighter for sticking to their played game plan. “After the first round, I realized Szabo was a better boxer than a kicker, so I urged Tugume to front kick him”.
Szabo himself attributed his loss to the long journey he travelled prior the fight. “My opponent was technically better on the night, but the long distance I travelled to the venue was disgusting”, Szabo said through an interpreter.

By 6 PM, hundreds of Tugume’s supporters had already settled at the venue. The breathtaking under card fights, the humor from the day’s MC’s Allan and Afande Kelele , entertainment from VIP dancers and a host of upcoming artists kept them thrilled up to the moment when the main fight kicked off at midnight.

The highlight of the under card fights was the semi professional bout between Gulu’s Romano Lee and Mbarara’s Pius Mwesigwa. The fight lasted only 10 seconds after the latter hit his opponent to the floor with a powerful round kick and the referee, Eddie Gombya, immediately stopped the fight as medics were quickly called in to attend to an unconscious Romano Lee.

Tugume’s Good Friday fight was a tune up fight for the do-or-die upcoming battle between Kickboxing razor mouthed Moses Golola and Titus Tugume come June 19th at Lugogo Cricket Oval, Kampala.
