Federation of International Volleyball (FIVB) senior coaches’ instructor Alemayehu Shoatatek has tipped Uganda to take its rightful place on the continent. Shoatatek was speaking last week at the closure of the five-day Volleyball Cooperation Programme (VCP) course in which a record 35 teachers and junior coaches benefited from this year’s course.
“Five, four years back Ugandan volleyball was not at a good level,” Shoatatek told kawowo Sports. Shoatatek has been coming to conduct the same course and other coaching course for the past eight years. “Now the structures have improved over the years. The activities are very good and the organization and planning is up there,”
The Ethiopian instructor who has also watched a few league games is optimistic it’s just a matter of time that Uganda will become a household name in the region and beyond. “In the near future, Uganda will take its rightful place as the best among the East African countries. This is my aspiration and I hope, there is no reason why Uganda will stay behind in the zone and continent as well,” said Shoatatek.
The VCP is the lowest level of coaching; it introduces the basics of Volleyball especially to coaches who plan to specialize in coaching children. KCCA women’s coach Isaac Omendo together with teammate Luke Eitit of Sport-S and Nemostars’ Christopher Ajeana were the other high profile players who did the course.
Uganda Volleyball Federation has lined up three courses this year one for teachers, level one coaches and the other for referees.
