Fahad Ssewankambo 4-1 Julius Ssenabulya (Nateete Shopping Mall)

Wasswa Kayiiya 4-2 Adam Kasibante (Jacaranda Pub, Wakaliga)

Fahad Ssewankambo, 19,an s.5 student at Nateete Muslim Secondary School has defied all the odds to progress to the grand finals of the 2013 Nile special open pool championships slated later in August on 31st at Lugogo indoor stadium.

Ironically, Fahad, qualified for last year’s championships but was barred from competing because he was ‘assumed’ below 18 years, contrary to the tournament rules and regulations that participants have to be 18 and above. Perhaps the reigning 2013 Easter pool champion has had to wait for his chance to make the cut with this life changing victory. He beat a strong field of over 30 pool players at Nateete Shopping Mall during the Rubaga region qualifiers on Friday evening.

“I knew i was the favourite and i really had to work hard to achieve this success, i need the Toyota progress by all means”, vowed the teenager, who features for Pool league giants, Skin Samona, the 2012 defending league champions.

Enroute his heroic feat, Fahad convincingly beat his fellow Skin Samona teammate, Julius Ssenabulya 4-1 in a game that lasted only 33 minutes. Fahad won the first two games before Ssenabulya pulled one back, but the calm and composed baby faced pool assassin won the remaining two to claim the sweet victory that also comes forth with a 100,000/= reward, a branded PAU-Nile Special medal and a certificate.

At the other playing center in Wakaliga at Jacaranda Pub, Wasswa Kayiiya, one player that has held  the banner of Scrap Yard aloft  in the National league produced the form of his life as he only lost two games from start to finish. He won with an identical 3-0 scores against John Kabugo, Willy Lubega, Tonny Sserubiri, Hamuza Walakira in the semifinals before winning 4-2 against a hard fighting Adam Kasibante. Infact, by the time umpire Hakim Kirunga marked the end of the game in the 4th game of the final, Wasswa chocked at the death with only the black ball to score, thus giving an advantage to Kasibante to equalize 2 all. The 27 old Mechanic at Mwanga II road however redeemed face and image to claim the remaining two games and win the 100, 000/- from the tournament sponsors, Nile Breweries Limited.

“Having lost out in the 2008 grand finals at the final hurdle, i have a lot to learn from. I am surely a contender at Lugogo.”, swears Wasswa, the current Pilsner league of kings top scorer on 25 goals with an average of 41.5.

Action resumes Sunday at MM pub Kabuusu and Password Pub in Nakulabye. Catch you there.
