800 M: Ronald Musagala (1:45:37)

Ronald Musagala grabbed all the attention at the 2013 National Atheltics Championships held at Namboole as he hit the qualifying time for the World Championships after he clocked  1:45:49 to finish second in  heat three of the semifinals in the 800 metre race.

Musagala was boosted by  Kenyan Abdenego Chesebo, who clocked 1:45.37.  The Qualifying time for the world Championships  is 1:46.20.  In the final of the same event, he however slowed up to clock 1:47:00.

The development means that unless Julius Mutekanga runs below 1:45.30 in two weeks time, he will be dropped from team in favour of Musagala.

“I feel very happy having qualified today, but it is up to me to intensify my training ahead of the world champions. I thank my coach Mr Raphael Kassejja and all the people who have helped me qualify.”, a happy Musagala told Kawowo sports.

Musagala had beaten Moses Kipsiro in the 1500m  final, though he was short of the qualification mark by 1 second. The qualifying mark is 3:37.00.

Moses Kipsiro  has a miserable event as he was again beaten by Abdallah Mande  in a slow paced 5000m, where they were trying to help Geoffrey Kusuro qualify but ended up finishing third in the 500m event.

Uganda Atheltics President, Dominic Outchet, praised the youngsters for the high level of competition but challenged them to work even harder and avoid indecent behavior.

“We can even perform better, live a responsible life, avoid drugs, train well and have a good nutrition”, Dominic urged.

The over all Clubs accolade was taken by Serere District, and the team manager, Emille Otekat promised them a bull come next week. Telecommunications giants, MTN Uganda offered the cash prizes to the top 3 finishers in each event while Aqua Sipi Mineral water quenched the athletes’ thirst at the two day Championships.

The event was organised by Uganda Athletics Federation (UAF).
