UPDF vs Prisons (Namboole Stadium)-10 a.m
As the Various Uganda People’s Defense Forces (UPDF) sports teams prepare for the East African Community Military Games, scheduled to commence on the 5th August in the Kenyan Capital of Nairobi, the Handball team will conduct their second trial warm-up game in a space of 5 days with Prisons at Namboole Stadium on Thursday starting at 10.00 a,m.
“The main intention of this friendly game is to check the mental-physical readiness and fitness levels of all our players ahead of the Nairobi games”, says the team skipper, Godfrey Akena.
The last time the 2 teams met was just 5 days ago on Saturday when the army side piped Prison by just a goal with a 31 – 30 scoreline in highly competitive game, only similar to the usually fast paced league derbies.
By half time of this game, the scoring board was 16 all and the second half started rather on a high for Prison but later the army side showed their prowess and fitness to come back in the game beating Prison by just a goal.
Gilbert Ojokol and George Akena top scored for the Spears with 9 and 7 respectively with Ibrahim Kongo adding 5 while Moses Akena top scored for the army side with 7 goals and Muhammad Muwanga added 6.
UPDF is currently in residential training as they prepare for the East African Community military games that are expected to end by 17th August. The last time this event was held in Bujumbura, Burundi in 2011 in which UPDF were victors in Football, Silver medalists in handball and netball bronze medalists.
Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, Burundi and South Sudan Military sports wings are expected to send in teams for Athletics,Handball, football, netball, and basketball.
