I1th Africa Junior Championships:
In Mauritius
A Ugandan Junior Athletes Contingent  of 4 is set to battle for  the top honors at the 11th Africa Junior Championships in Mauritius beginning Thursday 29th August to Sunday 1st September 2013.
The four athletes are Halima Nakaayi, who had impressive times at the recently concluded National open Championships at Namboole Stadium. In Mauritius, Nakaayi will race in the 400M and 800M category.
The Kampala University student clocked  54.92 to win the 400M in Namboole beating Scovia Ayikoru (Serere) 55.52 and Shida Leni (Ndejje) 56.27 while in the 800m, she returned 2:01.68, edging Dorcus Ajok (Ndejje) 2:08.78, and Febia Chemutai (Police) 2:13.59.
The others include Denis Opio 200m/400m who is making his first international appearance,  Moses Kurong and Mande Abdalla who will feature in 5000m and 10,000m.
Police’s Mande Abdallah, who beat Moses Kipsiro at the 5000M in the July National Championships is a bright ray of hope and a medal prospect. He clocked 13:30.96 to win the 12 laps having outstretched Moses Kipsiro (Elgon) who posted 13:31.08.
Debutant, Denis Opio (Serere) clocked 22.27 in the National Championships over the 200M is another keen eye to catch. He beat Musa Isabirye (Jinja SS) 21.68, Godwin Byamukama (MAK) 21.86 in a hotly contested final at Namboole during the finals in July.
Uganda Athletics President Dominic Outchet expects positive results from the youngsters. “The future of our athletics today lies in the youth and i expect a great performance from the 3 boys and the lady”., he told Kawowo Sports.
“All the 4 athletes are in fine shape”, says the Federation publicist, Namayo Mawerere.
