Sat, 26th Oct 26th 2013: National Half Marathon (21 KM)
Start: Kaween District
Finish:Kapchorwa Town
7:00 am – 11 am
All roads will this Saturday head to Kapchorwa and Kween Districts as the two will jointly host the 2013 National Half Marathon (21km) Championships on October 26.
“The competition route will be a one way route starting from beyond Kween Town and ending in Kapchorwa Town.”, Uganda Athletics Federation Publicist, Namayo Mawerere says . The Event will feature the 10 km Race and 21 km race.
The previous championships have been hosted in Kampala for the last three years in a row but this time round, the federation focus has shifted to the far Eastern districts known to be a hub for the country’s long distance runners.
The competition is expected to attract big numbers of runners especially after the Presidential cash rewards to Olympic and World Champion Stephen Kiprotich and pledges to medals winners at Africa and beyond.
Former Moscow World Youth 3000m champion Catherine Webombesa and Poland World Mountain Running bronze medalist Nathan Ayeko are the defending champions having convincingly beat their opponents in the 21km ran last year in Kampala.
Breaking away from the field just 200metres to the finish, Ayeko who was not among the pre-race favourites , stunned a strong field of national and international experienced opponents when he sprinted to finish to win the race in 1:01.2. This marked his debut in 21km race and claimed his first major national title since turning senior this year.
Former World Youth Champion Catherine Webombesa bounced back in style in last edition to claim her second national title (1:19.3) after two year’s of absence on the national road running scene. She last won the national road running championship two years ago.
