2013 IOC Trophy Winner: Gabriel Wangara Jaliisa Oloka

The International Olympic Committee trophy winner for the year 2013 has showered special praise on the respective sports media personalities in Uganda that have over the years continued to diligently execute their respective tasks at hand without fear or favor.

“For over the 40 years i have worked with various sports federations, i have never got any grievance with the press. I therefore salute all your duties and please keep the up the legacy”, Oloka, 70, said in his acknowledgement speech upon at the Uganda Olympic Committee offices upon being announced the International Olympic Committee 2013 trophy winner.

“For all members of the press (print, electronic or otherwise), i just say a big thank you for promoting our sporting activities. I remember Charles Bwekyaso, Patrick Luwandagga, and a host of many others, their work has been top class. “, he added.

The award (which will be specially handed to him in the coming days) is for persons who have performed exemplary in the promotion of Olympic movement and its values, development of athletes in Olympic sports. 

 “I congratulate Mr Oloka. His victory is a true triumph as a leader who has helped us with this cross generational executive at Uganda Olympic Committee (UOC). Winners of this special award are the people with exemplary character, ultimate commitment and service towards sports. Anybody even the pressmen can be awarded”,  William Blick spoke before the media at the Olympic Committee boardroom in Lugogo.

 The beneficiary of the award can be from within the Olympic family or from civil society who have immensely contributed to the development of Olympicsm in the country.

How Oloka was Nominated:

International Olympic Committee wrote to all the National Olympic Committees (N.O.Cs) in the world to nominate people for various awards each year. 

The Executives of the respective N.O.Cs meet and discuss the issue to seek nominations from stakeholders-member federations to nominate people who merit consideration  and submit to the Executive committee.

Previous Winners:

Late Rev Polycap Kakooza who served as General Secretary of National Council of Sports from during post Independence period and thereafter, the Late Major General Francis Nyangweso (Founding member of ANOCA and Executive member on various International sports bodies), and Mr. Nicholas Oneg p’Minga (introduced Handball, Archery, Rowing, canoe Kayak in Uganda).

Who is Oloka?

Full-Names:  Gabriel Wangara Jaliisa Oloka

Parents: Damascas Oworo and Mary Alowo (Both Deceased)

Date of Birth: 1st Nov 1941

Place of Birth: Widaka Village, Kirwa Sub County, Kisoko County, Tororo District

Best Life Moment: Being part of the Common Wealth games in Manchester City as Team Uganda Official

Worst Life Experience: Suffering a compound fracture while playing football in 1969 for Coffee F.C

Career: Member of Mubende District Football Association, Member of Kampala District Football Association ,Developed Uganda Darts Association up to International level ,Chairman of Uganda Handball Federation, Chairman of East and Central Africa Handball technical committee, Initiated the revival of Uganda Rifle Shooting Federation as it Secretary General, Became member for Uganda Olympic Committee (8 years) and in 1994 he was elected Secretary General of U.O.C (1994-2009)

Qualifications Held: Holds a C-License and B-Certificate in Rifle shooting coaching, obtained in Switzerland and Germany respectively in 1996 Trained and tested as National sports course director (Currently Uganda has 12 trained sports course Directors).

Current Work: Head of Culture and Olympic education at U.O.C
