The Atlas Lions of Morocco have progressed to the quarter finals of the Championships of African Nations football tourney following a convincing 3 -1 victory over Uganda at the Cape Town Stadium in South Africa on Monday evening.
Forward Abdessamad Rafik gave the North African side the lead on the stroke of the half hour mark for a 1 – 0 first half lead. Yunus Sentamu, who scored his third in 3 matches equalised on the hour mark to give the Ugandans some ray of progression hope.
But Second half substitute, Ijaour Mounssine had different thoughts altogether with a strike 13 minutes to full time before Abdel Kabir El Oui killed off the game late in the added minutes of extra time to send Morocco to the last 8 and condemn the East Africans to out of the championships played for by domestic players who feature in the nations’ respective local leagues.
At the Anthlone Stadium, Zimbabwe won scored through a Masimba Mambare 56th minute strike have joined Morocco to progress out of group B.
The Moroccans, who drew their opening two games to Zimbabwe and Burkina Faso respectively, finish with 5 points with a superior goal difference as compared to Zimbabwe, same points (5) after their 1-0 victory the West Africans, Burkina Faso. Follow all the teams’ table standings.
Uganda started their CHAN campaign with a 2-1 win over Burkina Faso, they then followed that up with 0-0 draw against Zimbabwe.
CHAN 2014 Matches continue on Tuesday when Ethiopia plays Ghana and Mauritania hosts Gabon in group C fixtures.
