At Silver Springs Hotel
Ahead of the slated February 1st Federation of Motorsport Clubs of Uganda (FMU) elective assembly at Silver springs Hotel in Bugolobi, tensions are high as the day draws closer and closer.
Already, founder president Jack Wavamunno, former FMU vice president Kisitu Mayanja and 10-time motocross champion and Speedway Motorsport Club (SMOC) president Arthur Blick are vying for FMU presidency after Incumbent George Kagimu is not eligible to seek a third term, having served two.
Uganda Motor Rally Drivers Club (UMRDC) have already confirmed they will not be part of the elections following a brawl with FMU.
UMRDC president Duncan Mubiru argued that they had no preferred choice for FMU president because none of the candidates had presented their manifesto to UMRDC members.
“We don’t know what they plan to do for the sport. We hope to begin a new chapter with whoever becomes president. We have no reason to trust any of them until he addresses our simple issues,” Mubiru is quoted by to having remarked.
At the height of the wrangle between UMRDC and FMU, Mubiru, Nasser Mutebi, John Burrows and Geoffrey Nsamba were controversially banned for six years. FMU lifted the ban five months later after their decision was challenged in courts of law.
The elective assembly has 84 delegates drawn from 15 clubs and FMU executives.
Haji Hamid Gombe was the latest to join Jack Wavamunno, Arthur Blick and Kisitu Mayanja in the race.
Meanwhile, the National Council of Sports has denied the responsibility of electing the electoral body yet the names of all the contestants will be forwarded to its offices early next week.
“We are looking ahead as the outgoing executive to hand-over the names of the nominated candidates to National Council of Sports this coming week,” revealed one of the members in the outgoing FMU executive.
FMU elections are expected to take place on February 1, and the National Council of Sports is expected to oversee the events of that day.
“National Council of Sports can help FMU during the elections by supervising the proceedings,” said Jasper Aligawesa, the National Council of Sports general secretary.
FMU elections take place every after two years and no leader is allowed to lead the Federation for three consecutive terms.
Basing on the above, George Kagimu cannot stand again for presidency.
