Team Uganda arrived safely in Cape Town yesterday ahead of the prestigious Zone VI golf championship at the Devonhale Golf and Wine Estate in South Africa.

“Despite the fact that the team’s golf kit was not in Cape Town we reached safely and expect to receive the kit today,” Kiryowa Kiwanuka, the Uganda Golf Union president,who is the leader of the delegation stated in an e-mail. “The spirit in the camp is good and the players are ready for the task at hand.”

Team Uganda is led by Phillip Kasozi, who is the captain of the side the other members on the team are Adolf Muhumuza, Lawrence Muhenda, Ronald Rugumayo, Ronald Otile, Happy Robert(Reserve), Gideon Kagyenzi, Willy Deus Kitata, Robert Oluba and their coach Deo Akope.

The Zone IV is made up of Botswana, Kenya, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, South Africa(defending champions), Swaziland, Lesotho, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe.

 “It was a long trip, but the players are in good spirit,” Kiwanuka added. “Aside from the anxiety created by the fact the golf bags did not arrive with the team we hoping that the same shall be received later today.”

Uganda finished sixth in last year’s edition which was won by South Africa their is hope from the Uganda Golf Union that this year the national team can do better and even go on to win the tournament.

The team will now go and complete the registration exercise and thereafter have a leisurely walk around the course just to get a feel of the same in preparation for the practice round tomorrow.

Tomorrow’s action will see the Ugandan players battling in Singles and also the Longest drive on the 10th fairway. The tournament concludes on Thursday with the final round of Singles.
