The 2014 national chess league commenced over the weekend at Hotel Africana with contrasting results recorded.
Sanlam Chess club opened up with two sweet victories over the UCU Queens and Lweza.
Inspired by Olympians,Harold Wanyama and Mathias Ssonko, Sanlam had a clean sweep of 5 – 0 over the Queens before losing half a point to Lweza When Wanyama drew with the 2065 rated Michael Mawanda.
Mulago Knights who beat Nkumba A and Entebbe Knightmare 4 – 1 and 5 – 0 respectively lie second of the 25 club league.
In one of the highlight games, International Master (I.M) Elijah Emojong beat Olympian, Arthur Ssegwanyi.
About 125 chess players are involved in the league whose scoring system is the Olympiad method (3 points per win, 1 for a draw and none for a loss).
The league will resume on the Sunday of 22nd June 2014 at Hotel Africana in Kampala.
