Uganda’s hopes of bagging gold in boxing were dented last evening after Mike Ssekabembe was disqualified hours to his semi-final bout for allegedly failing a pre-fight medical.
Ssekabembe was due to fight England’s Joe Joyce who earned a walk over to the finals leaving the Ugandan to settle for bronze.
Scans on Ssekabembe’s wrist showed a fracture but according to reliable sources from team Uganda in Glasgow, an independent scan revealed just a swelling and no fracture.
Compatriot Fazil Juma Kaggwa lost to two time Olympic medalist Patrick Barnes of Ireland but also walked home with bronze.
The two bronze medals ensure Uganda has so far managed five medals including a gold medal thanks Moses Kipsiro’s triumph in the 10,000m.
Other medal winners are athletes Winnie Nanyondo and Abraham Kiplimo.
