APR FC (Rwanda) 2-2 Rayon Sport (Rwanda) – APR FC win 4-3 on penalties

Rwanda’s APR FC have eliminated rivals Rayon Sport from the 2014 CECAFA Kagame Cup thanks to a 4-3 penalty shootout after a two all draw in a tense game played at Kigali regional stadium, Nyamirambo.

Michel Ndahinduka put the Rwanda army side in front in the 14th minute before Rayon Sport rallied back through Congolese import Gentil Salita Kambale who volleyed home in the 32nd minute after the APR FC failed to clear danger from a corner and later captain Fuadi Ndayisenga put the Blues into the lead.

The skipper picked a lose a ball at the half way line and continued his movement towards the APR FC goal without much opposition before he sent a rocket of a shot that caught APR FC goalie Olivier Kwizera off guard for Rayon Sport’s second in the last minute of the first 45 minutes.

After recess, Petrovic Ljubomir’s side showed more intent to attack as they launched endless attacks on the Rayon Sport goal and their effort was rewarded with an equaliser from Herve Rubwiro.

Despite moves from each side in search for a winner, the final whistle came with both goals still tied at 2-2.

Then came penalty shootout where both sides missed the first kick with Rayon Sport’s James Tubane’s kick saved by Kwizera while skipper Ismael Nshutimayagara put his wide despite goalie falling the opposite way.

There was another miss for Rayon Sport through James Tubane whose shot hit the post though Mutombo Govin, Abouba Sibomana and Gentil Kambale converted.

APR FC then converted through Yannick Mukunzi, Charles Tibingana, Eric Rutagenda and senior player Jean Baptiste Mugiraneza who converted the winner to send the army side’s fans into wild celebrations.

The win sets up a clash of armed forces in semis as APR FC face Police FC who earlier kicked out Burundi’s Atletico Olympic 9-8 on penalties.
