U-14 Girls:
1st Round: Coman Emilia Florentina (Romania) 1 – 0 Gloria Nansubuga (Uganda)
2nd Round: Gloria Nansubuga (Uganda) 1 – 0 Irina Andriatsiferana (Madagascar)
3rd Round: Nina Gardiner (South Africa) 0 – 1 Gloria Nansubuga (Uganda)
Uganda’s upcoming chess teenager, Gloria Nansubuga (unrated) overcame two world’s rated players; Irina Andriatsiferana (rated 1613) of Madagacar and South Africa’s Nina Gardiner (1663) in the ongoing World Youth Chess championships.
This was during the second and third rounds of the ongoing World Youth Chess fiesta in Durban, South Africa played on Sunday.
Nansubuga, a Senior one student at St Mbuga Vocational school, had earlier lost to Romania’s Coman Emilia Florentina in the first round played on Saturday.
The 13 year old is participating in the Under 14 age category and will face another rated player, Chiara Polterauer from Austria.
Chiara is rated at 1903 by FIDE in the world.
Another Ugandan based in the USA, Lumala Tendo Lumala, is also participating in the Under 10 boys category.
Lumala lost the first two games before overcoming Malawi’s Charles Gondwe Khimwa in the third round.
“Nansubuga is targeting a global rating. We hope by the end of the 2 weeks’ tourney, she will be rated by the global chess body, FIDE”, Vianney Luggya, the Uganda Chess Federation president told Kawowo Sports in an earlier interview.
The first time a Ugandan participated in the World Youth Chess Championship was when reigning National Junior Champion, Benjamin Mukumbya took part in last year’s event held in Al Ain, UAE and earned himself a first rating after a solid display in the Under 18 category.
The World Youth Chess Championship began on 20th September and will run till 30 September 2014.
