Uganda’s FM Harold Wanyama (2241) forced a long and hard fought draw with seasoned South African IM Ken Solomon (rated 2380) in the second round of the Africa Individual Chess Championship in Windhoek, Namibia on Sunday 14 December 2014.
It was a splendid result for the Ugandan who needs to accumulate as many rating points as possible from this event. Scrapping a draw off an opponent whose rating is 139 points above yours is certainly one sure way of attaining that objective. Wanyama now just needs to maintain the momentum and focus on doing what he does best.
In the third round to be played later today, he will be up against yet another South African in the young and exciting FM Klaasen Calvin Jong (rated 2180), who upset Egyptian GM Adley Ahmed in the first round and drew with Nigeria’s FM Kigigha Bomo in the second round. It is set to be a mouth watering contest. Wanyama will have the black pieces.
Still in the third round, Kenya’s CM Ben Magana will be up against Ghana’s Francis Eric Anquandah (1952).
