Boxers of the national pugilists team, The Bombers, impressed in the invitational Nyerere memorial boxing tournament on Saturday in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania ahead of the upcoming 2016 Olympic qualifiers.
Five out of ten boxers made it to the finals of the five-day event with 2014 Commonwealth Games bronze medalist Fazil Juma Kaggwa (light flyweight) and team captain Rogers Semitala (flyweight) in the lead.
Veteran Badru ‘Teacher’ Nyombi (light heavyweight), Nasser Bukenya (light welterweight), Baptista Tabu (middleweight) also reached the finals and Fazil Juma Kaggwa’s fight against Tanzanian Hamadi Omari Furahisha measured up to the fan’s delight in the light flyweight semifinal bout.
Fazil Juma Kaggwa emerged winner unlike his dreaded loss at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Northern Ireland’s Irishman Paddy Barnes, who went on to clinch the light flyweight gold.
