The Eastern Uganda sports press association (ESPA) has voted Mbale Eagles’ upcoming women rugby player as the best sports personality for the month of July.
At the body’s monthly assembly held at Namboko Hotel in Mbale town, the sports journalists voted Apoya for winning a golden boot as a best kicker after making six conversions, and helped her side to finish 5th position in the recent concluded Uganda women 7 a side rugby tournament held at legends rugby club.
The 16 year old athlete Apoya, a senior two student at Manafwa High school tallied 170 votes to beat Bulambuli District Cross country Seyokwo Mumini with 130 votes.
Seyokwo won the National boys cross country title held in Gulu after clocked 24:32 in the 8km race.
Dan Okiror had 130 votes, 8 goals top scorer in the inter District eastern zonal mini league and Paul Malinga 120 votes best player of the Mbale primary school ball games tournament.
The sports journalists commended, Irene Nekesa, a 13 year old pupil at North road in primary p.6 who plays Table Tennis.
Nekesa won two gold medals at Nabisunsa T T schools open under 13 girl’s singles after beating Janepher Butemi aged 13, another p.6 pupil at Nabuyonga primary school on a 3-1 results also she won a gold medal at Mbale T T open championship under 13 girls singles on a 3-1 win against Janepher Butemi at Manafwa High school.
Ivan Wamunsi won two medals at Mbale TT open July championship where he beat Chelibe Gilton and Paul Batambuze in the men singles and won a trophy in team event category were Wamunsi helped his side photo genix to beat Mbale tigers to win the 2015 Mbale T T open title.
Another commended personality was woman footballer, Fazira Ikwapu.
The Pro city women F.C team skipper scored two long range dramatic second half winning goals against Mbale tigers in the finals of the Elgon Zone women Elite football tournament, she helped her side to finish unbeaten and qualified into National women elite football league.
Mbale city F.C emerged the champions of inter District Elgon sub region zonal mini league.
They beat Tororo based Galaxy on spot kicks 6-5 after a goalless draw.
Mbale city was also voted the best disciplined team of the tournament after receiving only 3 yellow cards out of 28 and no red card.
The journalists hosted officials from Mbale badminton association who conducted a seminar on badminton rules of the game.
Agatha Apoya will be crowned in the next assembly to be held on Thursday September 4th 2015 at Namboko hotel in Mbale town.
Meanwhile, 10 year old badminton player Ibrahim Mukuwa was crowned the ESPA June sports personality was crowned at the same Assembly held on Thursday 6th at Namboko Hotel the ceremony was presided over by Mulongo Jackson Natanga director of Mulongo Driving School, the ESPA local sponsor.
